Make Room Is Open!

Make Room, City of Melbourne’s transformation of an abandoned substation building into studio accommodation for 50 people who have been sleeping rough is complete and will welcome new residents from January.

Our team led extensive Lived Experience engagement with First Nations people who have experienced homelessness and then developed a series of cultural safety design guidelines and recommendations to enhance the project.

Homelessness amongst First Nations people whom we yarned with has a broad definition.  We were told that being in foster care, being taken from family, experiencing AOD issues and having lost connection to Country and culture is all part of homelessness.

With a dedicated women’s and First Nations floor, as well as on site medical and mental health support we are so proud of how we embedded the wisdom of our lived experience experts into the design.
